It’s not every day an architect invites someone to live in their passion project – and this one of Queensland’s five best homes this week.

Built to be a bold, resort-style home for the woman who designed it, ‘Blackwood’ is a high-end design built for luxury living north of the Sunshine Coast.

Architect Sarah Waller designed and built the home on a 1.9 acre estate in Doonan, during the Covid-19 pandemic: a task made easier by her experience in the field.


The five-bedroom, six-bathroom house at 134 Valley Dr, is the third house Ms Waller has designed for herself and her family, and the second she has fully built.

“I’m a very organised person, so that’s where I come into my own as a builder,” she said. “I like to think that I have my construction hat on at the design stage.”

Creating and overseeing the build of the house meant Ms Waller needed to have hands-on-experience with overcoming challenges, such as the complexity of the sharp roof detailing.

“That was easy on a piece of paper to design and detail that,” she said. “But in reality, it was very, very challenging to get to that point.”

The vendor is moving on to create her next home, unique to the previous two designs.


Designed with a family in mind, Ms Waller recommended the property for someone who wants to feel like they’re living in a holiday home.

Queensland Sotheby’s International Realty, Noosa Heads, is accepting best offers for the property until July 31.

36 Langside Road, Hamilton

The five-bedroom, four-bathroom home at 36 Langside Rd, Hamilton, is a three-level property specially built for elevated and open living.

When property developer Philip Pezzi built ‘Torre’, he compared its design to Tetris blocks: using its extra floors to create a unique home with a view atop a wide parking space.

“[We wanted] to ensure that we can create a luxury feel for the home, but also that it’s liveable,” he said.

The verticality of the home allows for extensive parking away from narrow neighbourhood roads.


The home’s extra floors are designed to take in natural light from around the area, with skylights and windows up to four metres tall from front to back.

“You can walk in the home during the day and you won’t need to use any lights,” Mr Pezzi said.

With marble finishing across the house’s various amenities, its hillside location makes it a prime fit for families keen to get plenty of sun.

Place New Farm is holding inspections for the house at this time.

11 Vivian Street, Tennyson


11 Vivian St, Tennyson

Oxley Creek is a winding stream of water leading south from the Brisbane River – and right next to both of them the home at 11 Vivian St, Tennyson.

The three-bedroom, two-bathroom house sits directly by the creek, giving residents the chance at waterfront living at a similar price to other suburban homes.

Vendor Doogan Ohanlon said living at the property sometimes felt ‘like a mini-getaway”, and that he felt a surprising level of privacy in his backyard overlooking the creek.

The vendors would spend many weekends by the water, and spent all of Easter in the house with their extended family.


“From the water you actually don’t see other houses, which is quite unique,” he said. “We spend most Sundays down there playing with music and successfully – or unsuccessfully – fishing.”

With a contemporary living plan, entertaining spaces and a gondola down in the garden, the home is built for family gatherings large and small.
